Thank you to everyone for your thoughts, prayers and kind words over the death of my mother. Your support has helped Candy and I through this difficult time.
Elections:
Region election time is fast approaching. My current term as Region Director ends in June as does Rod Kivell’s term as Section 3 Chief. Nominations for Region Director are open until January 26th and can be submitted through the Central Division WEB Site (http://www.nspcentral.com). I have been nominated and will accept that nomination to run for reelection. I look forward to serving the patrols and patrollers of Northern Michigan Region for another three years if elected.
Nominations for Section 3 Section Chief should be emailed to me at [email protected]. Rod Kivell is willing to continue however, his Region OEC Administrator position requires a significant time commitment and I’m sure he would help anyone from Section 3 that would like run for Section Chief. Please see the NMR Policy and Procedure Manual at http://www.nspnmr.com/policy--procedure-manual.html for a description of requirements, roles and responsibilities.
On-hill Clinics:
We had very successful Instructor and Candidate clinics at Boyne Mountain this past weekend. Twenty Seasoned Instructors and Instructor Candidates reviewed, analyzed and agreed on expectations for Alpine Patroller and Alpine Senior Candidates at upcoming Section and Region Evaluations. They then ventured onto the snow and spent the rest of the day calibrating their on the hill evaluation skills.
On Sunday twenty two Alpine and Alpine Senior Ski & Snowboard candidates participated in Toboggan and Ski Clinics learning what will be expected at the upcoming evaluations and getting to know many of the evaluators that they will see later in the season. This is a great opportunity to for candidates to learn from our region’s best, get to know the people behind the score cards at evaluations and have a lot of fun in the process.
Special thanks to John Wiley and Annaka Norris for preparing and executing these events.
Region Toboggan Enhancment Seminar:
Saturday January 31st is the annual NMR Toboggan Enhancement Seminar at Boyne Highlands. We have cut this back to a one day event this year to ease the load on our training staff and to avoid the rush to the coach on Super Bowl on Sunday. This is always a great event with excellent instructor/toboggan/candidate ratios. Emphasis is on having fun while honing toboggan skills. This program is not limited to Alpine or Senior Alpine Candidates. Any Alpine Patroller is welcome to come and enhance their toboggan skills. There is a $25.00 charge for this program and enrolment is limited, John Wiley will be sending registrations details in the near future.
Open Region Positions:
We have several open staff positions and are looking for members willing to help the Region. Taking on a Region position is a pain in the b..t, It’s extra work, it’s extra trips. At the same time it’s fun and very rewarding. NMR is fairly unique in that two thirds of our members don’t live in the region and drive 3 – 10 (or more) hours for patrol duty. Meeting all the requirements to maintain membership in a NMR Patrol is time consuming and adding even one more trip can be painful to think about. However, the success and stability of our patrols in patrollers our region is very rewarding.
We are looking for patrollers to fill the positions of:
• Assistant Proficiency Advisor. This position assists the Region Proficiency Advisor and staff in planning and executing the Region Instructor Recertification Clinic, Candidate Clinic, TES/SES and Senior On-Hill evaluation. It is heavy on organization, communication and administration. Contact John Wiley for more information and to recommend candidates.
• Region Ski School Director. This position requires PSIA Level 2 or higher certification and is responsible for planning the ski portion of Region Events. Again contact John Wiley for more information.
New Staff
I’m happy to announce that Megan Thompson has accepted the position of Senior OEC Training Coordinator. In this role Megan will assist Rod Kivell in providing training to prepare candidates for the OEC Module of the NSP Senior Program (formally Senior Scene Management) evaluation. Megan will also assist with the planning and execution of the OEC Module Clinic and evaluation.
Senior Evaluations:
John Wiley will be sending PD’s a final request for candidates for this year’s Senior On-Hill Evaluation with a final deadline of 1/19/2015. It takes a lot of planning to execute these evaluations so please watch for John’s email, confer with candidates and training staffs and reply by End of Business on Monday. No additions will be accepted after Monday. Let’s do the same for OEC Candidates and email Rod Kivell with a final list of candidates for the OEC Module Evaluation.
Awards
The deadline for submitting individuals for Merit Stars, Distinguished Service Awards, National Appointments and Leadership Commendation Awards is just 5 weeks away on February 20th. These awards must be processed through the Region and sent to Division in early March to allow enough time for processing at Division and National in time for our May 2nd Awards Banquet.
Applications for Outstanding Patrol and Patroller Awards must be received by March 1st. There are many subcategories of these awards, large and small Ski Patrol, Patroller, Alpine Patroller, Paid Patroller, Instructor, OEC Instructor, Administrator, etc. I know there are many deserving members in our Region but they won’t get recognized unless they are nominated. Contact Virginia Rodeman for additional information and help with writing award applications. Current application forms are on “my bookshelf” at nsp.org. Please submit all awards in MS Word format Virginia at the email address below.
